Week of  3rd January 2000

Last Week

Monday, 3rd January

Due to Jane being occupied with family chauffeur duties - one of her aunts is near death with cancer, and the other aunts want to be at the bedside - I've been deputed to do the "take my Mum home after Christmas" run to Wales. This will have to be a quick 'there and back again' run with an overnight stay, since I have to be back in London for work Wednesday. Thus this will be an off-line entry, posted when I return home.

It was an easy trip, although Peanut 's intermittent electrical problem seems to be getting worse. I'll have to get it sorted. Should be a warranty repair.

Jane's aunt died today, peacefully, in her sleep, at about 10 am. The funeral will probably be next week, and is likely to follow London procedures (everyone turns out) rather than my home procedure (men only). I may be requested to attend, and will do so, even though I didn't know her very well.

United Media still haven't fixed the links on their cartoon archive pages - the dates appear in the monthly calendar, but they aren't clickable. Luckily, Creators.com have all the missing strips posted already, so I've had an orgy of downloading (about 2 weeks of each strip) I've also added "Wizard of ID" to the list. United Media have just lost a visitor.

Sunday, 9th January

I haven't even turned a computer on since Thursday - too much else going on. I've just done two nights of freelance work, and hard work at that, compiling lots of short clips from tape to tape (although why the record format is Panasonic D3 I don't know. It's so rarely used that I've never before had my hands on one). Incidentally, the digital videotape formats are sequentially numbered (except for variants on Sony's Digital Betacam, of course) but there is no D4. This, I am told, is because the Japanese consider the number 4 to be unlucky.

We had to replace the shower enclosure in the loft over the weekend, one of the hinge pins on the door had broken. This entailed some fun, since the shower tray is smaller than most, and I had difficulty finding an enclosure small enough - most DIY shops sell enclosures to fit an 800mm square shower tray, mine is 750mm square. Also I had to charge my battery electric drill, and the enclosure is held together with no.6 by 10mm pan-head self-tapping screws, which need a 3.3 to 3.5 mm hole drilling. Did I have a 3.3mm drill bit? No. Could I buy a single drill bit that size? No. I had to buy a new set, with fractional sizes in it.

The funeral will be on January 19th. Must book a day off.
