Armistice Day

Strictly, one should observe Remembrance on this day, being the anniversary of the end of hostilities in the First World War. By convention, official observances are kept on the nearest Sunday.

It's a new shift start today, a 10 shift, so again it'll be short-form work. And there's nothing much to say about that.

It's the time of year when we order our Christmas tree(s). A local woman provides an ordering service, in aid of a local Scout Troop, and we've been in the habit of ordering from her for several years now. Nordmann Fir trees, in various sizes, supposedly non-shedding, so you don't get lots of pine needles on the floor - but they do shed, just not as much as the ordinary trees.

This year, Sarah has decided to get her own tree - a small one - and Mum, in her wisdom, wants two. One small for her dining room, and a larger one for her sitting room. We'll settle for one. So that's 4 trees, in 2 sizes, and I was tasked with hand-delivering the order form, and a cheque for payment, on my way to work. So I did.

This evening, comes an e-mail from Anthony Stirk - my Habduino shield has shipped.

Wednesday, 13th November

The Habduino shield is here. Now I need a suitable Arduino to use it with - not all Arduinos are created equal in this regard. An Uno will serve, and I can get one quite easily, probably from Proto-Pic. I also need a 70cm stubby antenna, preferably right-angle, with an SMA plug on the end. These are not easy to find, at affordable prices.

Having run out of arthritis-mitigating pills, I excursed to the doctor's surgery this morning. I previously had a script for the same pills to attempt to clear up my frozen left shoulder. The arthritis seems to have gone away for the moment, but I still don't have full mobility in the shoulder, so I got a script for 2 months of reduced-dose anti-inflammatory tabs, plus the antacid stomach pills that go with them. One of each a day, ask for more when required, since this is a repeat prescription, so I don't need another appointment to get them. Of course, since I'm over 60, there's no charge for this under the NHS. This is how ObamaCare should have been implemented in the States - NHS care is free at the point-of-use, but it's paid for by one's National Insurance contributions over the years.

Thursday, 14th November

Mum has an appointment at the memory clinic today, to see how she's getting on with the newly-prescribed anti-dementia drugs. And barring a degree of sleepiness, she's having no problems. Certainly, the expected side-effects of stomach upsets and nausea appear to be absent. This is good. These drugs are more effective in cases of vascular dementia, which Mum has, than they are with Alzheimers. Next appointment in March next year, when they will perform another memory test run to see how effective the medication is.
